Razorbacks pound Rebs, sweep DH


But after a sobering eight hours of baseball at Oxford-University Stadium, the Rebels are confronted with this reality: Simply making the eight-team Southeastern Conference postseason tournament is no longer a given.

Ole Miss lost both ends of a doubleheader to Arkansas on Saturday, 13-11 and 12-4, falling squarely back into the middle of the SEC pack.

Though still leading the West Division by 1› games, Ole Miss (28-17, 11-10 SEC) has six of its final nine league games on the road, including next weekend’s three-game series at league-leading Georgia.

Arkansas (26-18, 9-11) flashed plenty of power during the doubleheader, feasting off an Ole Miss pitching staff that had one of its worst days of the season.

Razorbacks’ second baseman Tim Smalling had a career day, blasting four homers — three in the first game and another in the second. Arkansas had nine home runs in the doubleheader.

“It was a bad day to play two against Arkansas,” Ole Miss coach Mike Bianco said. “We had no answer for them. They were unconscious at the plate.”
