HATTIESBURG, Miss. - - Southern Miss scored 11 runs on 11 hits to defeat Mississippi State 11-7 in front of 4,525 fans at Pete Taylor Park Tuesday evening.
The Golden Eagles put up 10 runs in the first four frames and got another outstanding game from their relievers to hold the Mississippi State offense in check.
"It was a good night for us, we hit the ball well and our bullpen was outstanding once again," head coach Corky Palmer said.
Seth Hester started his second game of the season, working 4.2 innings and allowing six runs on seven hits. Jonathan Johnston worked three innings in relief to pick up his first career win, allowing only one run on two hits while striking out three.

The Southern Miss bullpen has been outstanding over the last six games, picking up two wins and three saves while working 27.2 innings and allowing only 20 hits and two earned runs while recording 34 strikeouts.

The program has been in decline since the late 1980s..when you really look at it. Polk had one helluva a career, but all in all this program has underachieved since the day it left Omaha in 1985. Posted by Bo on 04-24-2008 at 05:51 AM [link]

I think Polk is actually becoming senile. He goes in the dugout last night and throws Raffo out there to handle the “hecklers”. Posted by sixpackspeak on 04-24-2008 at 06:55 AM [link]

I am constantly amazed at how fast State fans can climb off the bandwagon. Posted by jammerman on 04-24-2008 at 10:35 AM [link]

There is no bandwagon to fall off. We are sub .500 in the SEC. Only 3 teams in the SEC have been sub .500 for their overall record in the past 5 years. Posted by sixpackspeak on 04-24-2008 at 11:47 AM [link]

The bandwagon is am referring to is not the last five year bandwagon, but the last 25 year bandwagon. If you cannot remember SEC baseball before Ron Polk you should not comment on some sub-par years. Without Ron Polk it can truthfully be said that there might not have ever been the national champiosnhips and CWS appearances by ANY of the SEC schools. On the contrary, if Mississippi State football wins again, we can’t enjoy that because our football history has been definitely sub par. What you are saying is ridiculous. I appreciate everything Polk has done for college baseball at MSU, the state of MS, the SEC, nationally, etc. With that being said, his legacy is being tarnished with every ejection, excuse, near arrest that has occurred. SPS, you are truly clueless. So LSU would not have 5 National Championships without Polk?? How do like this year, how do you like not making the SEC tourney, How do you like your rival passing you by in our sport, how do you like having a below 500 record in the SEC since Polk came back for round 2. I too appreciate all he has done for us, but eventually you have to move on. Did Bear Bryant not retire, Did Jimmy Johnson not retire, Did Vince Lombardi not retire. All legends but they realized they could NOT get the job done anymore. I doubt very seriously your are a 6 packer with your type of thinking. Some of us actually want to win and be competitive in all sports. I am sure you love LT as well. Are you are Sharon Fanning supporter. She loses each and every year. Jumb on her bandwagon. Drugdog, I think you and I are saying the same thing. We both are ready for Polk to move on. Posted by sixpackspeak on 04-24-2008 at 04:00 PM [link]

You guys need to agree to agree...and we’ll meet up at The Alumni House Sports Grill and figure out the rest. The SEC Baseball tourney without MSU is like college football w/o the SEC...As we say on Out of Bounds...It’s all about the DRAMA Posted by Bo on 04-24-2008 at 04:54 PM [link]

Without stooping to calling someone else’s thoughts or opinions ridiculous, let me reiterate: SEC baseball would not be what it is, would not have the stadiums, the fan base or anything else that makes it unique without Ron Polk. And LSU may well NOT have the national champiosnhip because Alex Box Stadium was a tiny little afterthought in LSU sports, much like Alabama’s stadium, Georgia’’s or anyone else you want to name. I was there, I went to them all and I saw them all.

You missed what I said. I said I appreciate everything he has done but at the same time, the program has been in a downward spiral for a number of years. Last year was an anomaly. Don’t get me wrong, it was great but it was an anomaly. Posted by sixpackspeak on 04-25-2008 at 09:50 AM [link]

And the decline continues. Lack of coaching, intensity, and desire equal many losses, no fan support. Can this season end quickly enough and start new with a fiery new coach, new passion to win, fan support, increased revenue, and an overall desire that has been lacking for many years now.
