UCLA to hire Jim L. Mora as football coach

UCLA has reached an agreement to hire former Atlanta Falcons and Seattle Seahawks coach Jim L. Mora, according to a person familiar with the situation who is not authorized to speak on the subject.

UCLA is expected to make a formal announcement on Saturday, and he is to be introduced next week at a news conference.

Mora and Athletic Director Dan Guerrero were not available for comment.

UCLA masquerades by day as a dream job in a dreamy location minutes from the beach and Rodeo Drive. The campus is sun-splashed and gorgeous and surrounded by swimming pools and movie stars.

Jackie Robinson, Bob Waterfield and Troy Aikman graced these university grounds, so how come no outsider wants to coach the descendants?
The search for Rick Neuheisel’s successor drags on, like Igor and his chain, with prospective candidates drying up or seeking employment elsewhere.

Checked off the list so far are Boise State’s Chris Petersen (no surprise), Houston’s Kevin Sumlin and Miami’s Al Golden.

UCLA football team will try to bounce back one more time

UCLA running back Johnathan Franklin huddled in the back of the small locker room at the Coliseum on Saturday night, with no way to hide his emotions.

Stunned. Shocked. Defeated. All products of USC‘s 50-0 victory over UCLA.

“We’ve got to . . . uh . . . swallow it and accept it,” Franklin said, then acknowledged, “50-0 is a hard pill to swallow. We did not show up. We did not show up.”

Days later, Franklin showed up, smiling and determined.

Somewhere in Southern California, seemingly every day of every football season for the last 15 years, somebody has asked that question.

Why can’t the largest college in America’s second-largest city hire a great coach for America’s most popular college sport?

Why can’t a leading institution in the entertainment capital of the world hire someone who can make the football team entertaining? Why can’t the winningest college athletic department in American sport find a football coach who can consistently win?
