Golden Eagles to introduce new basketball coach Tyndall today

HATTIESBURG — Southern Miss fans are expected to get their first glimpse of new basketball coach Donnie Tyndall at 4 p.m. today in a news conference at the Trent Lott Center on the school’s campus.

Tyndall leaves Morehead State, where he served six years as head coach and led the program to a pair of NCAA Tournament appearances during the last four seasons.

Tyndall accepted the USM job Saturday morning. And although USM officials have not yet publicly acknowledged that Tyndall will replace Larry Eustachy, Morehead State officials on Sunday issued a news release saying that Tyndall is leaving for the USM job.

Former Cowboy Sanders cited for fight at home with estranged wife

Former Cowboy Sanders cited for fight at home with estranged wife

PROSPER, Texas — Former Dallas Cowboys star Deion Sanders has been charged with misdemeanor simple assault in the wake of an altercation with his estranged wife that got her arrested at their mansion in suburban Dallas, police said late Tuesday.

Police said further investigation led to citations against both Deion and Pilar Sanders, who still live together but on different sides of their palatial home in Prosper, a city about 30 miles north of Dallas.

The charge doesn’t warrant arrest. Prosper police spokesman Celso Martinez wouldn’t detail the allegations, but said the charge covers any act considered aggressive and could be as simple as touching or defensively jerking away from someone’s grip. The charge carries a fine of up to $500.

Mike Matheny Letter To Parents

Mike Matheny Letter To Parents

Message from Kevin Seitzer – Mike Matheny is the new St. Louis Cardinals Manager.  Mike lived with me in Milwaukee his rookie year.  He’s one of the most respected, wonderful people you will ever be around.  Mike coached his kids after retirement and this is a letter to the parents on his team.  This may be the BEST letter I’ve ever read regarding youth baseball and is exactly what “The Mac-N-Seitz Way” is all about.  Please enjoy and help us get there!

Letter from Mike Matheny…..

I always said that the only team that I would coach would be a team of orphans, and now here we are. The reason for me saying this is that I have found the biggest problem with youth sports has been the parents. I think that it is best to nip this in the bud right off the bat. I think the concept that I am asking all of you to grab is that this experience is ALL about the boys. If there is anything about it that includes you, we need to make a change of plans. My main goals are as follows:

There’s nothing minor about marijuana issue

There’s nothing minor about marijuana issue

The issue isn’t whether marijuana should be legalized or where it ranks among the litany of debilitating substances. Right now, its illegality remains the law. The only issue that matters is why three young men who have overcome more than their rightful share of obstacles allegedly risked compromising everything for something as dim-witted as getting caught in a car with pot.

One day after we learned that Lions running back Mikel Leshoure faced his second criminal marijuana possession conviction in the past month, he got some company on the “Exactly What Were You Thinking, Numbskull?” lineup.

Michigan State center Derrick Nix spent much of Tuesday in an Ingham County jail after police arrested him and accused him of marijuana possession and operating a vehicle with any presence of drugs.

Sports Illustrated’s Ultimate Playlist

That is the rich vein from which SI has mined its first collection of Sports’ Greatest Hits. These aren’t stadium anthems (no Gary Glitter here) or novelties (sorry, Super Bowl Shuffle). These are songs by serious artists who used sports as subject and metaphor, rated for both the music and their message. Many are by great storytellers with wonderful tales to tell.

The philosopher Umberto Eco said we like lists because they bring order to chaos and make us feel immortal. And we know that rock ‘n’ roll will never die.

The glue that binds fathers and their children is sports

The glue that binds fathers and their children is sports

Years ago, I covered the grand opening of a minor league baseball ballpark in California. They’d scrambled to complete the project in time for opening night. So much so that I leaned against a stadium railing while scribbling on my notepad, and walked off a few minutes later with a stripe of dark green paint across my shoulder.
Just before first pitch, I saw an older gentleman with white hair standing in the seats behind home plate. It was what he had in his hands that I noticed: a newborn baby

Social media and sports a growing dilemma

When it comes to college athletes, some universities have more stringent policies in place, including in-season social network bans for a growing number of teams.

Most professional sports leagues only ban tweeting while games are being played and for a period of time before and after games. They do not ban social media altogether, mostly because Twitter and Facebook postings are protected by the First Amendment.

Late Yankees owner George Steinbrenner helped FBI with 2 investigations

WASHINGTON – The FBI released documents Monday stating that New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner assisted the agency in two investigations — one of them apparently a terrorism probe — in the years leading up to his pardon by President Ronald Reagan on a campaign-contributions conviction.

The Associated Press and other news organizations requested the FBI file under the Freedom of Information Act following Steinbrenner’s death in July. The first release was made last December. The two releases combined totaled about 800 pages.

College Football: The Top 25 Schools That Have Never Won a National Championship

College football has been crowning a champion since 1869 when Princeton claimed the first of its almost 30 national titles.

Although in 141 years many have tasted from the chalice of ultimate victory, there is an equally impressive list of quality, long-standing programs that have never won the big enchilada, the whole ball of wax…the national championship.
