Eagles hoping to climb ladder

HATTIESBURG — With just 10 games left in the regular season, Southern Miss will look to make a charge up the Conference USA standings when it travels to Tulane today for Game 1 of a three-game series at Turchin Stadium at 6:30 p.m.

The Golden Eagles (25-19, 9-6 C-USA), who fell to No. 25 Ole Miss 3-0 Tuesday before having Wednesday’s contest against Grambling State postponed because of inclement weather, enter the weekend just two games behind league leader Rice.

PEARL — Freshman Josh Laxer had quite a homecoming tonight, pitching seven strong innings to help lead Ole Miss to a 3-0 victory over Southern Miss in a non-conference baseball game at Trustmark Park.

Laxer, a product of Madison Central High School, was named the Metro Player of the Year last season by The Clarion-Ledger. Pitching back in the metro area tonight, he limited USM to four hits in seven innings to improve his record to 4-0. Laxer struck out five and walked one.

Rebels-Eagles set for tonight at Trustmark

OXFORD — When rain forced the postponement of Ole Miss and Southern Miss’ game in Pearl on April 3, it created a bit of a scheduling nightmare for both sides.

The No. 25 Rebels and Golden Eagles now must play five games each this week, starting with today’s 6:30 first pitch at Trustmark Park, at a time neither can afford a letdown.

Ole Miss (28-16, 10-11 SEC) will start freshman Josh Laxer from Madison Central. He’s 3-0 this season with a 5.51 ERA, with three midweek starts on his record.

Utah State, San Jose State acknowledge MWC talks, say nothing definitive yet on realignment

SALT LAKE CITY — Officials at Utah State and San Jose State acknowledge they are in discussions with the Mountain West Conference over realignment for 2013 yet say no formal agreement has been reached.

Conference USA already is set to bring aboard Texas-San Antonio just months before the school was to begin its first season in the Western Athletic Conference.

Golden Eagles to introduce new basketball coach Tyndall today

HATTIESBURG — Southern Miss fans are expected to get their first glimpse of new basketball coach Donnie Tyndall at 4 p.m. today in a news conference at the Trent Lott Center on the school’s campus.

Tyndall leaves Morehead State, where he served six years as head coach and led the program to a pair of NCAA Tournament appearances during the last four seasons.

Tyndall accepted the USM job Saturday morning. And although USM officials have not yet publicly acknowledged that Tyndall will replace Larry Eustachy, Morehead State officials on Sunday issued a news release saying that Tyndall is leaving for the USM job.

MSU takes on USM at Trustmark Park

STARKVILLE — As Mississippi State continues to work out the kinks with its offense, there is some confidence to draw upon.

The Bulldogs (24-16) travel to Trustmark Park in Pearl to face Southern Miss (23-16) today at 6:30 p.m.

“We’ve been fortunate that we’ve had a lot of success against them,” MSU coach John Cohen said. “But they certainly are very capable of beating anybody.”

MSU defeated Southern Miss twice last season – once in Trustmark Park and the other in an NCAA Regional.

HATTIESBURG — When Larry Eustachy landed at Southern Miss eight years ago, he was a basketball coach who had fallen from grace and was nowhere near the top of the candidate list for other job openings.

When he led the USM program to the NCAA Tournament this past season for the first time in 21 years, he re-established himself as a winner and repaired his image on the national scene.

On Thursday, Eustachy was rewarded with a bigger paycheck as he was introduced in Fort Collins, Colo., as the new Colorado State head coach.

Eagles rip Rebels, 10-0

OXFORD — Southern Miss pounded Ole Miss 10-0 tonight, handing the Rebels their worst non-conference baseball loss since the opening weekend of the Mike Bianco era.

The Golden Eagles led the whole way, dominating the No. 19 Rebels during the rout. It was Ole Miss’ worst loss against a non-SEC opponent since losing 18-6 to Arkansas-Little Rock on Feb. 10, 2001.

PITTSBURGH — Larry Eustachy has always taken losses hard.

The Southern Miss coach rarely hides his disgust when the Golden Eagles come out on the wrong end of the scoreboard.

Following his team’s 70-64 loss to Kansas State Thursday in the NCAA Tournament, Eustachy was accepting of the outcome and appreciative of his players’ performance.
