Griffin will be combine’s star attraction

Griffin will be combine’s star attraction

INDIANAPOLIS — Baylor University quarterback Robert Griffin III will grab the biggest spotlight starting today when the NFL Scouting Combine is held at Lucas Oil Stadium.

Even though Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck is a virtual lock to be the first overall pick when the NFL draft begins April 26, Griffin is the focus of the drama in the draft.

There is a good chance some team will trade up to make him the second overall pick. St. Louis owns the No. 2 pick but does not need a quarterback. The pick is for sale. Cleveland has the fourth pick and Washington the sixth. Those two quarterback-needy teams are considered the favorites to move up to get their franchise QB.

Which team will fall most in love with the Heisman Trophy-winning Griffin? And what will it cost to get him? These are the questions that will be debated over the next two months.

Davey O’Brien winner Robert Griffin III conceding nothing in NFL Draft

Robert Griffin III, the former Baylor quarterback, does not like finishing second to anyone in any endeavor.

That is why Griffin, honored Monday as the winner of the 2011 Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award during a ceremony at the Fort Worth Club, refuses to shut the door on the possibility that he will be taken with the No. 1 pick in the 2012 NFL Draft even though multiple draft analysts predict that honor will go to former Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck when the Indianapolis Colts exercise the selection in April.

“I want to be the best. I want to be [taken] No. 1… But I also want to be wanted,” Griffin said. “Whether I get drafted first or not, it’s not going to change the way that I play or the confidence that I have in my own ability.”

Griffin, the 2011 Heisman Trophy winner, said he views this week’s NFL Combine, which begins Wednesday in Indianapolis, as a “business trip” in which he can show teams that he has the skills worthy of being the first overall pick. NFL draft analyst Mel Kiper, Jr. said last month that Griffin (6-foot-2, 220 pounds) has “no chance” of surpassing Luck (6-4, 235) in the estimation of Colts officials or in his draft rankings.

Griffin says he’ll “wow them in the interviews” at Scouting Combine

Griffin says he’ll “wow them in the interviews” at Scouting Combine

Robert Griffin III might be the best athlete ever to play the quarterback position, a track star who could have been an Olympic hurdler before he decided to focus all his attention on football. So it’s no surprise that Griffin is confident he’s going to put on a show at the Scouting Combine.

But Griffin says what will really impress NFL coaches isn’t his 40-yard dash or vertical jump. Griffin says when it’s time to sit down for individual interviews and Xs-and-Os sessions with NFL coaches, that’s when he’ll really shine. Because Griffin says that NFL coaches are going to see that he’s mentally ready to run an NFL offense, right now.

Baylor QB Robert Griffin III- “I’m the best”

Baylor QB Robert Griffin III- “I’m the best”

After capturing the Heisman Trophy this season, Baylor QB Robert Griffin III (or RG3), has moved into the position of being speculated as the second quarterback off the draft board in April’s NFL Draft. The prospect of being the second quarterback chosen in the 2012 Draft doesn’t sit well with Griffin, and he thinks that he should be chose first overall in 72 days.

Speaking with SI.com’s Don Banks, Griffin told the writer that he thinks he is the best quarterback in this year’s draft class. “I hate to talk about myself like that, but if I had to straight up tell a head coach or an owner why they should take me, it’s because I’m the best in everything I’ve done. I’m the most accurate. I have the strongest arm. I may not be the tallest. I may not be the heaviest. But I’m the best quarterback in the nation, and if they pass on me, then I understand. But I’m going out and be the best quarterback for somebody else,” said Griffin.

Heisman Trophy winners in bowl games

Last season, Auburn quarterback Cam Newton became just the third Heisman winner this century to double-up and also win a national title ring.

This season, Baylor quarterback Robert Griffin III is the first Heisman winner to not play in the title game in four seasons and just the third in the past 10 seasons. Florida’s Tim Tebow (in 2007) and USC’s Carson Palmer (2002) are the most recent Heisman winners not to play in the championship game.

Griffin has guided Baylor to the Alamo Bowl, making him the first Heisman winner since Texas running back Ricky Williams in 1998 to play in a pre-New Year’s Day bowl; in ’98, Williams and Texas played in the Holiday Bowl.

Here’s a look at how Heisman winners have fared in bowls since the Heisman was introduced in the 1935 season.

WACO, Texas — Robert Griffin III played football for years simply because he was good at it.

Then Baylor’s exciting dual-threat quarterback tore the ACL in his right knee and missed the last nine games of the 2009 season. While stuck on the sideline watching, he realized just how much he loved the game.

“After a knee injury like that, a lot of times you see guys come back and it’s not the same,” Griffin said. “So I didn’t want that to be attached to me, great player, got hurt, never was the same. … My goal was to come back better, not only for myself, but for my teammates.”
