Mike Slive gets the better of Jim Delany again
BIRMINGHAM, Alabama - Mike Slive just sank Jim Delany‘s battleship.
No, wait.
That sounds cute, but it’s not exactly true.
What Slive really did by partnering the SEC with the Big 12 to invent a new made-for-television, money-printing postseason game was build his own battleship.
A Rose Bowl by another name.

More SEC expansion coming, but where?
The last time they stopped playing the “Realignment Rhapsody” and everybody scrambled for a seat, the SEC had 14 available chairs.
One year later, they’re cranking up the band again. And don’t be surprised if the SEC puts another couple of seats on the floor.
Even before the SEC holds a single sporting event as a 14-school conference, the possibility of further expansion is in the wind. WithFlorida State pondering its future in the ACC and batting its eyes at the Big 12, the intercollegiate deck soon could be reshuffled. Look for the SEC to do whatever is necessary to extend its footprint and strengthen its membership.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL NEEDS A COMMISSIONER
College football is the most nakedly self-interested of all the sports we love.
That’s why it’s failings are the most human, the most susceptible to special interest capture, the least logical, a banana football republic.
Most sports have a common interest that unites them in pursuit of a common pot of championship gold, college football does not.

“Third-Tier Rights” Defined & Perspective on Their Value
Tremendous confusion exists among college football fans regarding “third-tier rights.” Simply put, third-tier rights are games not desired or contracted for broadcast by a conference’s first and second-tier media rights holder which then become property of the individual schools which may broadcast or sell them as they see fit. As an example, Texas bundled its third-tier rights, partnered with ESPN, and formed the Longhorn Network about which I’ll discuss in further detail.
What each conference provides to its member institutions as “third-tier rights” varies greatly from conference to conference and here is where much of the confusion rests.

Washington State head football coach and former Texas Tech coach Mike Leach took to Reddit on Monday for an online chat with college football fans and answered a variety of questions ranging from football, his ongoing lawsuit and dating tips.
One of the most interesting questions Leach fielded was his thoughts on former ESPN college football analyst and current U.S. Senate candidate Craig James who is perceived by some people to have helped play up the Leach-Adam James mistreatment allegations.
The question posed was:
“Q: How much do you hate Craig James, I mean seriously?”
“Leach: I think my opinion is consistent with most of the rest of America’s. This is illustrated by a poll done in the Dallas Morning News where people were asked who they would vote for senator: Mike Leach or Craig James. I got 96.5 percent of the vote.”
Leach also was asked whether or not he would like to play Texas Tech in a bowl game in the future but the head coach mostly dodged it.

Tigers, Trojans, Tide exit spring practice atop Power Rankings
Other than deciding how to split the money, the most difficult task facing conference commissioners in the next few months is devising the system that will select the teams that play in the upcoming playoff. Do they keep the current BCS ranking system? Do they follow the model of the NCAA basketball and baseball tournaments and empanel a selection committee? Do they develop an entirely new ranking formula?

What Should and Should Not Be in the BCS Playoff Selection Criteria
There have been a lot of people throwing around ideas for the new college football playoff selection process. Most notable among them is Jim Delany floating an idea that any conference champions that finish in the top six get automatic bids. Top six of what? Possibly the BCS formula, possibly a new formula, or possibly according to a selection committee.
I’m not sure what will be in the final system, but I know some things that should and shouldn’t be there.
