Lions’ Nick Fairley charged with marijuana possession

Allen Park —Defensive tackle Nick Fairley, 24, became the third player from the Lions’ draft class of 2011 to be arrested for a marijuana-related offense since the end of last season.

First it was offensive lineman Johnny Culbreath, who was busted for possession in South Carolina in January. On Monday, it was revealed that running back Mikel Leshoure had been arrested twice in less than a month in southwest Michigan — for use and possession.

On Tuesday, it was Fairley, popped in his hometown of Mobile, Ala., for second-degree marijuana possession, a misdemeanor offense in Alabama. He was held at the Mobile County Jail and eventually released on $1,000 bail.

The curious case of Nick Fairley

“The technology and information-gathering age got him,” former 49ers, Rams and Cardinals scout Dave Razzano said.

“These teams gather so much info that they talk themselves right out of players.”

Fairley’s postseason sins included measuring “only” 6-foot-4, 294 pounds at the draft combine, missing a flight for one meeting with a team and being late for two others. All of a sudden, he was tagged with labels of “lazy,” “immature” and “one-year-wonder,” and those have all but covered up the 24 tackles for loss and 11 1/2 sacks he had last season.

Auburn’s Nick Fairley could be the one for the Carolina Panthers

Auburn’s Nick Fairley could be the one for the Carolina Panthers

MOBILE, Ala. The footage is a little grainy in spots, but there’s no mistaking Nick Fairley.

As Williamson High assistant coach Carl Jackson showed a video featuring two minutes of Fairley flinging down helpless high school quarterbacks and tailbacks, Jackson grinned and said: “Does that look familiar? That looks a lot like the Oregon player.”

Fairley’s performance against Oregon on Jan.10 in the BCS Championship Game capped the remarkable rise of the Auburn junior from a second-team defensive tackle to potentially the No.1 pick in the April NFL draft in a single season.

Nick Fairley is no longer Auburn’s dirty little secret

Nick Fairley is no longer Auburn’s dirty little secret

Reporting from Scottsdale, Ariz.

The film from the Nov. 13 Georgia game alone could make an opposing quarterback call in sick against Auburn defensive tackle Nick Fairley.

Fairley flagrantly speared poor Aaron Murray in the back, once ground his facemask into the quarterback’s chin and then, as a capper, charged late with his helmet into Murray’s kneecap.

Fairley drew blood and nearly caused a riot.
