NFC East Offseason Roll Call: A Look At Player Movement By Division

With the NFL Draft over and free agency winding down, it’s time to look at who is coming, going and who to watch out for in the NFC East in 2012. Here is a breakdown of roster turnover within the NFC East division:

New York Giants
Hello: In the latest Super Bowl win over the Patriots, tight end Jake Ballard went down and his status for the season is unknown, hence the signing of free agent Martellus Bennett (Cowboys) and the fourth-round selection of Adrien Robinson (Cincinnati).

Is Junior Seau death part of a bigger problem?

Is Junior Seau death part of a bigger problem?

You’re Roger Goodell, the law and order judge of sports commissioners, and you threw the book at the New Orleans Saints‘ bounty hunters. You did so in an age in which safety has become a searing issue and the post-career problems and tragedies of former players have grown too common to ignore.

You’ve been sending messages that the culture must change. That the cost of the same old NFL is too dear. So you hit four Saints with suspensions, and the debate about whether you had been too harsh had just begun to rage across computer screens, radio dials and TV channels.

2012 NFL Draft Grades

2012 NFL Draft Grades

The 2012 NFL Draft is in the books after one long and eventful weekend. There’s nothing left to do now but sit back and break down what each team did — and did not do — with their time on the clock.

The very unscientific formula behind these draft grades puts more weight on picks the higher they were made, as should be the case. So, a team could not save or ruin its draft with its late-round selections, but one guy in the first round or two could be a game-changer.

And with that, this year’s grades:

Cox among 12 from SEC projected in 1st round

NEW YORK — How appropriate for a quarterback-driven league that the top two picks in Thursday’s NFL Draft will be passers expected to turn around franchises.

Only one other quarterback is likely to go in the first round, when NFL teams will devour space-eating defensive linemen, pass rushers and wide receivers.

The league’s offseason Super Bowl runs for three days at Radio City Music Hall. Here’s how the first round might go:

Consensus 1st-round pick. As high as 6th on some boards, he’s picked 12th in this Associated Press mock draft.

NFL releases regular-season schedule

NFL releases regular-season schedule

The nation won’t have to wait long to see Peyton Manning in a Broncos uniform.

Manning’s first game as Broncos quarterback will come in prime time as Denver hosts Pittsburgh on the opening Sunday of the NFL season. The four-time MVP was released by Indianapolis after missing the 2011 season following neck surgery. After conducting a four-city lottery for his services, Manning landed in Denver, which hasn’t won a Super Bowl since his new boss, John Elway, was behind center.

He won’t have an easy assignment against the Steelers, who ranked first in overall defense and against the pass last year.

Tannehill a top-10 draft pick? Only when the annual madness sets in

Tannehill a top-10 draft pick? Only when the annual madness sets in

So here we are again, the annual NFL Draft, where smart men suddenly become incredibly dumb. Example No. 7 trillion: Texas A&M quarterback Ryan Tannehill is suddenly a first-round pick.

If Tannehill moved any faster up the NFL’s draft boards, he’d be Deion Sanders. Starships don’t travel this quickly. Still trying to figure out why. Was it his 1-5 record against ranked teams? Was it his completion percentage that fell last year? Was it his quarterback rating that was lower than Brock Osweiler’s?

Or the 19 starts? Or that not too long ago he was a wide receiver.

Maybe it’s the remarkable pedigree of Big 12 quarterbacks in the NFL, like Chris Simms, Brad Smith, Colt McCoy or Vince Young. They’ve been just swell.

Giants coach jabs Jets over Tebow talk

Giants coach jabs Jets over Tebow talk

Giants coach Tom Coughlin does not care that the Jets are making headlines this offseason, because his team makes them during the playoffs.

The Jets have taken the spotlight this past week with the acquisition of backup quarterback Tim Tebow, one of the most intriguing figures in football. Coughlin, speaking at the NFL owners meetings in Palm Springs, Fla., did not seem concerned.

“You know who the world champions are. Whether we’re on the front page every day or not, it’s not that important to me. New Yorkers know who won the Super Bowl,” said Coughlin, who coached the Giants to a Super Bowl XLVI win over the Patriots last month.

Biggest play of Super Bowl XLVI belongs to unlikely hero Blackburn

Biggest play of Super Bowl XLVI belongs to unlikely hero Blackburn

INDIANAPOLIS — The story behind Chase Blackburn is ridiculous, the kind of thing that would make your head explode if we got into it just yet, so let’s leave that for later and get into something else ridiculous, something else that could make your head explode. Let’s get into the play that Chase Blackburn made that salvaged Super Bowl XLVI for the New York Giants, kept them in it, gave them the chance to win it late — as of course they did, Eli Manning driving the team 88 yards in the final minutes for the winning touchdown in a 21-17 victory.

The touchdown drive was something else. Eli Manning was sensational, Mario Manningham backed up his abrasively confident talk early in the week by catching three passes on the drive, Hakeem Nicks caught two more, andAhmad Bradshaw grinded out the final seven yards, plowing the final six into the end zone for the winning points.

All good stuff.

But not head-explosion stuff. Not Chase Blackburn stuff.

Amid Super Bowl’s Noise, Quiet Leadership Prevails

Amid Super Bowl’s Noise, Quiet Leadership Prevails

Unlike a small number of boisterous Giants, Eli Manning rode the high road to championship heaven, officially making it a habit of besting Tom Brady and the Patriots in theSuper Bowl. No brag, just fact.

Manning set a Super Bowl record by completing his first nine passes. Brady bettered him with a record 16 straight. But Manning had the ball late in the fourth quarter and that, Brady knew, was going to be trouble.

“Eli’s had a great season,” Brady would say, softly, disconsolately, referring to the seven fourth-quarter comebacks engineered by Manning, including the biggest of all Sunday night at Lucas Oil Stadium. “He made some great plays in the fourth quarter.”
