Johnson goes from head Hurricane to Hall of Famer

Johnson goes from head Hurricane to Hall of Famer

NEW YORK (AP) — Jimmy Johnson was asked if he ever considered getting back into college coaching and responded by taking out his phone and scrolling through his pictures.

“There’s where I live on the ocean,” he said. “What I spend my time doing is …”

And Johnson showed the small crowd gathered around him a photo of himself and a 250-pound blue marlin he caught one morning, fishing by himself off the coast of Florida.

“They realize now I’m not coming back,” said Johnson, who went 52-9 and won the 1987 national championship in five years at the University of Miami before leaving to become coach of the Dallas Cowboys.

Nevin Shapiro is determined to bring down the Miami football program

Nevin Shapiro is determined to bring down the Miami football program

Nevin Shapiro, the former Miami booster who orchestrated a $930 million Ponzi scheme, isn’t done with his allegations and rants against the University of Miami athletic department and is determined to see several players pay for what he determines to be a betrayal against him.

“I’m more of a victim than a Ponzi schemer and assailant,” Shapiro wrote in an email to the Miami Herald.

Shapiro told Yahoo! Sports in August that he provided extra benefits, including meals, prostitutes and trips to Shapiro’s million-dollar Miami Beach mansion, to 72 Miami student-athletes and provided the financial documents and sources to back up his claims. The story took 11 months to report.

Big Three have big National Signing Day

As high school recruits across the country put pen to paper and signed their letters of intent on National Signing Day, the Sunshine State’s Big Three — Florida StateFlorida and Miami — all managed to land top-ten recruiting classes.

Florida landed the No. 3 class according to Rivals.com in only Will Muschamp’s second NSD at the helm of the Gators. The class was led by three five-star commitments, including D.J. Humphries, a 6-foot-5, 265-pound offensive lineman from Charlotte, N.C.

Jimbo Fisher and Florida State continued to find success on NSD, as well.

The Seminoles signed a pair of five-star recruits whenMario Edwards Jr., the No. 1 defensive end in the country, and Eddie Goldman, the No. 1 defensive tackle from Washington, D.C., both agreed to continue their playing careers in Tallahassee. Those additions helped FSU land the No. 5 class in the country according to Rivals.com.

Matt Barkley’s decision shrinks Dolphins’ draft options

Who do you think had the better Thursday, Matt Barkley or Jeff Ireland?

Barkley was serenaded by the Southern Cal pep band, televised on ESPN and applauded by a room of supporters for announcing in the college version of “The Decision” he was returning for his senior year.

Ireland’s job just got tougher.

‘Death penalty’ is an option for NCAA in University of Miami scandal

‘Death penalty’ is an option for NCAA in University of Miami scandal

On a day several former Hurricanes recruits now at other schools were cleared by Thursday of accusations made by convicted felon Nevin Shapiro, reports surfaced that the NCAA is not only considering invoking its “willful violators” clause in its investigation at the University of Miami but also will not shy away from using the so-called death penalty.

NCAA president Mark Emmert told USA Today that despite the penalty being used only once before in college football — against Southern Methodist University in 1987 — the association isn’t afraid of taking such a drastic action.

Miami case is a matter of greed, not need

Miami case is a matter of greed, not need

So, of course, in the wake of the latest college sports scandal, there echoes the latest college sports pablum.

Oh, those poor underprivileged children from the University of Miami. If only the NCAA allowed the football players to be paid, a sleazy booster wouldn’t have been able to buy them. Oh, the hypocrisy, the unfairness, the shame.
In the words of a surely weeping Keith Jackson … whoa, Nellie.
Did you actually read the Yahoo Sports report on the many impermissible benefits alleged to have been doled out to the Miami football and basketball players by a Ponzi scheme crook named Nevin Shapiro?

‘Canes have big money, big demands for next coach

‘Canes have big money, big demands for next coach

Dot One: Losing to the University of South Florida didn’t finish Randy Shannon. He was fired two hours after last Saturday’s game. That kind of decision isn’t made so quickly. It was finalized long before kickoff. The loss just made the firing play better in public.

Dot Two: Some prominent Miami boosters were approached over the last month and asked about giving money toward a new coach. No coach was named specifically. The idea was to supply a war chest so money didn’t eliminate potential candidates.
