Recruiting and developing NFL draft prospects

Recruiting and developing NFL draft prospects

Last Thursday night 7 college football teams that combined to sign 94 (4 star) & 13 (5 star) players didn’t have one player picked in the first round.

Here’s looking at you and you lack of coaching & developing players:

1. Texas

2. Georgia

3. Florida

4. Florida State

5. Michigan

6. Oklahoma

7. Miami

Was it a fluke? Sure. Is it unacceptable? Absolutely. More proof that Mack Brown and Mark Richt are two of the best when it comes to underachieving in college football.

2012 NFL Draft Grades

2012 NFL Draft Grades

The 2012 NFL Draft is in the books after one long and eventful weekend. There’s nothing left to do now but sit back and break down what each team did — and did not do — with their time on the clock.

The very unscientific formula behind these draft grades puts more weight on picks the higher they were made, as should be the case. So, a team could not save or ruin its draft with its late-round selections, but one guy in the first round or two could be a game-changer.

And with that, this year’s grades:

Position U. pass catchers: A look at the 2012 draft

While the number of wide receivers drafted basically has held steady over the past five drafts, the number of tight ends has changed drastically.

There have been between 28 and 35 wide receivers selected in each of the past five drafts. But just 12 tight ends were selected last season, a drop-off of eight from 2010 and seven from ’09. Indeed, while there were 55 tight ends drafted from 2008-10, there were just 12 selected in both ’11 and ’07.

Interestingly, though, while there were 35 wide receivers drafted in 2008, there weren’t any first-rounders; that was the first draft without a wide receiver taken in the first round since 1990. Meanwhile, there was no tight end drafted in the first round last year; that was the first time that had happened since 1999.

Bobby Petrino: How Arkansas firing will affect recruiting vs. SEC rivals

Bobby Petrino: How Arkansas firing will affect recruiting vs. SEC rivals

Ole Miss and Missouri are two SEC football programs that often go head-to-head with Arkansas on the recruiting trail.

Coaches from both schools aren’t sure how Bobby Petrino’s firing will impact the competition with Arkansas for future recruits.

“I think it’s too early to tell,” Ole Miss coach Hugh Freeze told the AJC. “I think Arkansas has had some tremendous years recruiting and they have great facilities. I’m not confident enough to say we have a great advantage now. Now I think it could be an advantage but certainly they could go get another great coach in there, which I’m sure they will. Then [Petrino’s firing] would be over in the minds of recruits very fast … so it’s kind of hard for me to say on that.”

SEC programs, law enforcement have long history

SEC programs, law enforcement have long history

The Bobby Petrino saga has drawn attention to an often overlooked aspect of big-time college football: The relationship between coaches and the police who handle security for them.

Around the Southeastern Conference, providing sideline security for SEC programs is considered coveted duty. Some officers travel to away games, a cost paid for mostly by the schools. It can range from volunteer duty to part of the officer’s regular schedule.

Arkansas State Police Capt. Lance King, who provided security for Petrino at Razorback games, got the call from the coach when he wrecked his motorcycle.

Richt says Georgia will be ‘knocking on the door’ of greatness

Richt says Georgia will be ‘knocking on the door’ of greatness

Tampa – Back in July he was being asked if he could turn it around. On the first day of 2012, Mark Richt was asked if Georgia had turned it around. And he said …
“I think so. I don’t think there’s any doubt we’re in a good place. We won 10 games, and when you win 10 games you’ve done well.”

Here he smiled. “Though 11 is better.” Richt’s team can win its 11th game of a rebounding season by defeating Michigan State in the Outback Bowl on Monday.

McGarity added: “There’s really no need to speed through anything right now because he and I are in a good place.”

Georgia’s Richt declines offer to become A&M coach

COLLEGE STATION — Georgia coach Mark Richt has declined Texas A&M’s offer to be its next coach, according to a high-ranking A&M insider, apparently leaving one man left standing in the Aggies’ search: Houston’s Kevin Sumlin.

The insider said late Friday that Sumlin, 47, perhaps could be named Mike Sherman‘s successor Saturday, or as late as Monday. Sumlin, considered one of the top candidates all along, has guided the Cougars to a 12-1 season that includes a trip to the TicketCity Bowl in Dallas against Penn State on Jan. 2.
