Rebels await academic reports

Rebels await academic reports

OXFORD — Ole Miss should find out soon the status of three players who are in danger of not being academically eligible for the fall.

“We’re waiting on some final answers from faculty,” coach Hugh Freeze said. “You have to get 18 (hours) in two semesters. If you don’t get the 18, you cannot regain eligibility without sitting out in residence for one year. That’s the issue with those.”

Robert Nkemdiche: Nation’s No. 1 prospect officially delays college decision

Everybody will have to wait a little longer for the nation’s No. 1 football prospect to make his college decision.

Robert Nkemdiche told the AJC that he has officially pushed back his tentative announcement on May 18 to a later date.

“I’m just not ready yet,” Nkemdiche said. “This is one of the biggest decisions of my life. I want to go see some new places, and go back to some other places to spend more time with the coaches and to check out the campuses. It’s a big decision, and I want to get it right.”

Ole Miss plans to tweak drug policy

Ole Miss plans to tweak drug policy

OXFORD — Ole Miss is in the process of reviewing an athlete drug policy that has been considered among the more lenient in major college football.

“We’re going to adjust it,” coach Hugh Freeze said. “Don’t know exactly what it is going to be at this point, but we’re going to get that done.”

Freeze and new athletics director Ross Bjork inherited the current policy, which does not require an automatic suspension (three games) until the third failed drug test.

Have you ever seen “The Blind Side” movie?

Have you ever seen “The Blind Side” movie?

“Have you ever seen ‘The Blind Side’ movie?”

That’s certainly one of college football’s most unique recruiting pitches.

And it’s used with effectiveness by Hugh Freeze, the first-year coach at Ole Miss. Freeze has a special connection to the 2009 movie: He was the real-life high school football coach of Michael Oher, the movie’s central character who was a “homeless and traumatized boy who became an All-American football player and first-round NFL draft pick with the help of caring woman and her family.”

Brock Berglund Transfer: Berglund Will Take Time In Deciding New School

Ex-Kansas Jayhawks quarterback Brock Berglund is in high demand across the country as various schools look to shore up their depth at the position. But Berglund— a northern Colorado native who decided to leave Kansas after the hiring of new head coach Charlie Weis— told the AP this week that he will take his time in deciding on his future school.

Berglund told the AP that he’s chatted with the coaching staffs of the Miami Hurricanes,UCLA BruinsUNLV Rebels and Utah Utes. He’s also set to take an official visit with theMississippi Rebels, a school that itself is starting over with a new head coach who is likely considering his quarterback position something close to a clean slate.

Rebels make some progress in spring drills

Rebels make some progress in spring drills

OXFORD — At the beginning of spring football practice, five weeks and 14 sessions ago, Ole Miss coach Hugh Freeze said he was not asking for perfection. Passion would come first, execution in time.

With nothing left but Saturday’s Grove Bowl (1 p.m., CSS) to play before the first day of fall camp in August, Freeze is still harping on the latter and putting off the former.

OXFORD — Wesley Pendleton and Dehendret Collins. Dehendret Collins and Wesley Pendleton. In whatever order, the former Copiah-Lincoln Community College teammates currently represent the SEC-ready cornerback depth at Ole Miss.

“You never feel good about your depth in any position,” co-defensive coordinator and cornerbacks coach Wesley McGriff said. “When you have what you have, you always want more. I feel good about some of the guys I’m coaching, but always wish you had more depth.

Position U. pass catchers: A look at the 2012 draft

Position U. pass catchers: A look at the 2012 draft

While the number of wide receivers drafted basically has held steady over the past five drafts, the number of tight ends has changed drastically.

There have been between 28 and 35 wide receivers selected in each of the past five drafts. But just 12 tight ends were selected last season, a drop-off of eight from 2010 and seven from ’09. Indeed, while there were 55 tight ends drafted from 2008-10, there were just 12 selected in both ’11 and ’07.

Interestingly, though, while there were 35 wide receivers drafted in 2008, there weren’t any first-rounders; that was the first draft without a wide receiver taken in the first round since 1990. Meanwhile, there was no tight end drafted in the first round last year; that was the first time that had happened since 1999.

TOP 10 ARKANSAS COACHING CANDIDATES

TOP 10 ARKANSAS COACHING CANDIDATES

Arkansas has a great athletic director in Jeff Long. But it isn’t a top tier job in the SEC. When I ranked the top 25 college football jobs, I had Arkansas at 9th in the SEC. Right now I’d rank the SEC jobs 1-14 thusly: Florida, Bama, LSU, Georgia, Texas A&M (now that it’s in the SEC), Tennessee, Auburn, South Carolina, Arkansas, Mizzou, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Kentucky, and Vandy. Yes, yes, I know, I’ve horribly underanked your favorite team and am clearly biased against them. The more provincial your team’s fan base is, the more underrated you think your program is.

Bobby Petrino: How Arkansas firing will affect recruiting vs. SEC rivals

Bobby Petrino: How Arkansas firing will affect recruiting vs. SEC rivals

Ole Miss and Missouri are two SEC football programs that often go head-to-head with Arkansas on the recruiting trail.

Coaches from both schools aren’t sure how Bobby Petrino’s firing will impact the competition with Arkansas for future recruits.

“I think it’s too early to tell,” Ole Miss coach Hugh Freeze told the AJC. “I think Arkansas has had some tremendous years recruiting and they have great facilities. I’m not confident enough to say we have a great advantage now. Now I think it could be an advantage but certainly they could go get another great coach in there, which I’m sure they will. Then [Petrino’s firing] would be over in the minds of recruits very fast … so it’s kind of hard for me to say on that.”
