Frank Beamer built Virginia Tech from scratch to success
Starting from scratch in 1987, new coach Frank Beamer had every reason to fail at Virginia Tech.
The Hokies’ Peach Bowl team from the year before he arrived lost its core. The program was facing NCAA sanctions, including devastating scholarship losses that would linger for years. And there wasn’t much history to sell.
Yet Beamer stayed focused, overcame a 24-40-2 start — he’s still grateful for the administration’s patience — and built one of the nation’s greatest programs.
