Brees frustrated with contract negotiations, wants to finish career as Saint

NEW ORLEANS – As the days tick away with no deal between the New Orleans Saints and quarterback Drew Brees, some of the cracks of frustration are beginning to show publicly with the all-pro quarterback.

Brees granted WWL Radio an interview Wednesday with sports talk host Deke Bellavia to talk about, among other things, the lack of a long-term deal with Saints.

[Listen to the entire interview from WWL Radio.]

“I don’t know,” Brees said when asked why a long-term deal hasn’t been struck between him and the team. “It’s been extremely frustrating for me. I didn’t think that the negotiations should have been this difficult, but here we are.”

Another life cut short by an unforgiving game

Another life cut short by an unforgiving game

Professional football should come with a warning label. Like cigarettes, football can be hazardous to your health … and all too frequently lately it can be fatal.

If the sad truth of Junior Seau’s tragic death yesterday is that it came by his own hand, as Oceanside, Calif., police believe was the case, he is only the latest example of the ravages of a sport whose concussive demands seem to be regularly destroying its own.

Recruiting and developing NFL draft prospects

Recruiting and developing NFL draft prospects

Last Thursday night 7 college football teams that combined to sign 94 (4 star) & 13 (5 star) players didn’t have one player picked in the first round.

Here’s looking at you and you lack of coaching & developing players:

1. Texas

2. Georgia

3. Florida

4. Florida State

5. Michigan

6. Oklahoma

7. Miami

Was it a fluke? Sure. Is it unacceptable? Absolutely. More proof that Mack Brown and Mark Richt are two of the best when it comes to underachieving in college football.

Brian Murphy: Boise State lives up to the hype in NFL Draft

Brian Murphy: Boise State lives up to the hype in NFL Draft

Turns out the football program that won 50 games in the past four seasons had some talent, a fact that those who dismiss Boise State’s success as a byproduct of creative scheduling and poor competition and coaching wizardry always seem to leave out.
After a record-setting draft weekend in which six Boise State players were selected, including two in the first round, the Broncos’ talent level should no longer be in doubt. And, in the best news for Boise State fans, the draft success gives Chris Petersen and his staff yet more ammunition to use on the recruiting trail.

New Orleans Saints will enter draft without knowing of player discipline

New Orleans Saints will enter draft without knowing of player discipline

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell told reporters at a pre-draft event in New York that no Saints player discipline announcement is coming this week.

The confirmation that Goodell will hold off on levying punishment against Saints players involved in the pay-for-performance bounty scandal leaves Saints personnel in a bit of limbo as they decide which players to add to the roster during the upcoming draft.

Former Cowboy Sanders cited for fight at home with estranged wife

PROSPER, Texas — Former Dallas Cowboys star Deion Sanders has been charged with misdemeanor simple assault in the wake of an altercation with his estranged wife that got her arrested at their mansion in suburban Dallas, police said late Tuesday.

Police said further investigation led to citations against both Deion and Pilar Sanders, who still live together but on different sides of their palatial home in Prosper, a city about 30 miles north of Dallas.

The charge doesn’t warrant arrest. Prosper police spokesman Celso Martinez wouldn’t detail the allegations, but said the charge covers any act considered aggressive and could be as simple as touching or defensively jerking away from someone’s grip. The charge carries a fine of up to $500.

Cox among 12 from SEC projected in 1st round

NEW YORK — How appropriate for a quarterback-driven league that the top two picks in Thursday’s NFL Draft will be passers expected to turn around franchises.

Only one other quarterback is likely to go in the first round, when NFL teams will devour space-eating defensive linemen, pass rushers and wide receivers.

The league’s offseason Super Bowl runs for three days at Radio City Music Hall. Here’s how the first round might go:

Consensus 1st-round pick. As high as 6th on some boards, he’s picked 12th in this Associated Press mock draft.

Report: Saints’ Loomis eavesdropped on opposing coaches

Another day brings another allegation of un-Saintly behavior in New Orleans.

According to sources cited by ESPN’s Outside the Lines, soon-to-be suspended Saints GM Mickey Loomis had a device in his Superdome suite that enabled him to eavesdrop on opposing coaches. The device was apparently installed to allow a listener to monitor the New Orleans coaching staff but was allegedly altered to allow Loomis audio access to visiting teams during three seasons spanning 2002-2004.

Dabo Swinney’s plan to revolutionize college football

Dabo Swinney’s plan to revolutionize college football

Clemson’s Dabo Swinney is one of college football’s biggest advocates for the NCAA permitting a spring scrimmage against another team.

We’ve always endorsed the idea for three reasons: It would further enhance the enormous popularity of college football, it would give players and fans something to look forward to during the middle of the offseason, and most importantly it would generate much-needed revenue for college athletic departments struggling in the tough economy. Or proceeds could be donated to charity.

PEARL RIVER COUNTY — The Pearl River County Sheriff’s Department arrested 20-year-old Dylan Dewayne Favre on Thursday in Poplarville on a charge of possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute, Chief Deputy Shane Tucker said.

Tucker said Favre was arrested just before 1 a.m. at a routine traffic stop by a convenience store at the corner of Mississippi 11 and West North Street, near Pearl River Community College. An officer smelled marijuana from the vehicle, he said, and deputies found marijuana and drug-related paraphernalia.

Authorities would not comment to how much marijuana was discovered. Favre also was ticketed for not having a license-plate light, Tucker said. He was booked at Pearl River County jail.
