ESPN’s Sport Science compares Michigan’s Denard Robinson to Michael Vick

After Denard Robinson applied for feedback on his draft status from the NFL advisory committee earlier this week, it had John Brinkus at ESPN’s Sport Science thinking:

Could Denard Robinson be better than Michael Vick?

”Robinson is quite possibly faster than any quarterback in NFL history,” Brinkus said during the http://espn.go.com/video/clip?id=7379980 TARGET=“TOP”>2-minute video.

Other schools inquiring about QB Denard Robinson

“Every school wants Denard — trust me,” Art Taylor, who coached Robinson at Deerfield Beach (Fla.) High, said in a telephone interview. “I’ve heard from at least 10 to 15 schools already.

“Denard loves Michigan, but he has to do what’s best for him, because this is a big decision.”

Mississippi State amazed by Denard Robinson’s ability

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — When the Michigan game film clicked on for the first time, and the Mississippi State Bulldogs saw Denard Robinson doing his thing, a few defensive linemen turned to one another and said, “Woo, he’s pretty quick.”

They compared him to Michael Vick and Charlie Ward, two of college football‘s all-time speedsters. Yes, Mississippi State has faced the fastest the SEC has to offer, but after watching Robinson’s highlights, the Bulldogs realized there might be another gear.

Denard Robinson also wanted to play for Dan Mullen…

“I basically committed to him,” Robinson said Tuesday. “That’s basically what happened. We had built a relationship, and I’m probably going be his quarterback one day. Something like that.”

When did Robinson decommit?

“He had left and gone to Mississippi State, and I really didn’t talk to him after that,” Robinson said.

Michigan’s Robinson a smaller Newton

How he was able to set the NCAA single-season record for rushing yards by a quarterback (1,643) and still manage to throw for over 2,300 yards is remarkable considering the punishment he took from 245 carries.

Robinson fought through a sprained knee, an injury to his right (throwing) shoulder, two dislocated fingers in his left hand and concussion-like symptoms.

On the flip side, Newton’s iron-man performance saw him play every meaningful snap of Auburn’s march to the BCS National Championship game.

ESPN analysts weigh in on Rich Rodriguez, Michigan

ESPN analysts weigh in on Rich Rodriguez, Michigan

ESPN analyst and former Michigan star Desmond Howard said today he’s fine with U-M athletic director Dave Brandon waiting until after the Jan. 1 Gator Bowl against Mississippi State to evaluate coach Rich Rodriguez.

“I’m like Dave Brandon, the athletic director,” Howard said on a conference call when asked whether Rodriguez should return for 2011. “I’d like to see what the team looks like in the bowl game. I think they will have their hands full with Mississippi State.

Ramblings from The Sports Think Tank

Rambling from The Sports Think Tank

If the reports are true on Maryland hiring Mike Leach, they hit a homerun. Leach got a raw deal out in Lubbock at Texas Tech. When you win 84 games, out in the middle of nowhere in a tough conference, you’re a damn good coach. The Terrapin nation just got serious about football if The Mad Pirate is heading that way. In a weak ACC, Leach has a chance to play in the ACC title game a couple of times, and land that coveted BCS bowl bid.

Manny Diaz and Chris White v. Rich Rod (we think) and Denard Robinson

Some great storylines as we head into the Gator Bowl. Does it matter if Rich Rod wins or loses? Will David Brandon, Michigan’s AD and former CEO of Dominoe’s, fire him either way? What will Manny Diaz and the blue-collar defense have up their sleeve for a healthy Denard Robinson?

Who, if anybody, will take Chad Bumphis’ place as a down the field threat for Chris Relf? Relf, in my opinion, is the MVP of this over-achieving, helter-skelter, balls-to-the wall bunch in Starkville. When the Bulldogs needed 3rd down conversions and steady play for the most important, pressure-packed position on the field, Relf came through time and again. I could count a dozen “difference-maker” plays from Relf, in the UGA, Florida, Kentucky and Ole Miss games. The guys was nails all season long. Do not kid yourself, this a big game for the Bulldog Nation. A win on New Year’s Day could launch this program for the next couple of years.

Recruiting

Recruiting, in the state of Mississippi, will be vicious and intense to say the least throughout December and January. With Dan Mullen winning the last two Egg Bowls, the Ole Miss staff knows winning the recruiting battle in early February, will ease some of the fanbases concerns on the direction of the program. I look for January to be worse than Sherrill v. Tuberville and Sherill v. Cutcliffe. Buckle up guys, this recruiting season will have more drama than a sorority house in mid-October.
