Ole Miss, State both turned profit in 2011
A USA TODAY report on Monday showed Mississippi State to be one of only 22 self-sufficient athletic departments in Division I, turning a profit of $7.4 million in the 2011 fiscal year. Ole Miss, however, argues that it belongs in that group, too.
John Hartwell, Ole Miss’ senior executive associate athletic director, says it’s all about the way the dollars are reported to the NCAA.
While the $58 million in revenue MSU reported included $16.3 million from the school’s private fundraising arm, the Bulldog Foundation, Ole Miss’s reported revenues of $49 million included only a portion of money brought in by the UMAA Foundation.

Mitch Barnhart on successes, challenges of UK athletics
I’ve shared a few snippets of my conversation last Friday with Kentucky athletic director Mitch Barnhart. You can read his thoughts on basketball scheduling here and the new contracts for the basketball coaches here.
And now here’s everything else from a long, wide-ranging chat. Barnhart talked about what has been a remarkable year in UK athletics and the challenges ahead, including state funding for a football stadium renovation, patience with the football staff, and the latest on the future of Rupp Arena.
Enjoy. The remaining Qs and As with Mitch Barnhart:
How good has this year been for you and your department, considering a men’s basketball national title, women’s Elite Eight appearance and top-10 baseball, volleyball, men’s tennis and rifle teams?

College basketball players transfer in large numbersThe players started leaving in earnest during the spring of 2008, a trickle having turned into a stream that has seen 12 players transfer out of the basketball program at Southern Illinois University Carbondale.
Although there is no way to play down the problem and its impact, SIUC athletics director Mario Moccia can at least take solace in one regard: The program has been mimicking a national trend.
Transfers in college basketball remain brisk, with about 40 percent of all players switching schools within their first two years, according to NCAA President Mark Emmert.

No reason is good enough for Kentucky-Indiana to end
Last season, Kentucky and Indiana combined to produce, arguably, the two most memorable games of the 2011-12 college hoops campaign.
The great border rivalry seemed on the verge of returning to the level of its 1970s, early ’80s heyday when it crackled with electricity.
So, of course, the powers that be have snuffed it out.
In a move that seemed to catch UK off guard, IU issued a news release Thursday afternoon saying, simply, Indiana will not play Kentucky next season

Stanford athletic director Bob Bowlsby is in line to be the next Big 12 commissioner.
Two sources familiar with the process confirmed Wednesday night that Bowlsby has been offered the job. The Big 12 had been in the market for a commissioner since Dan Beebe was forced out during the height of conference realignment last year.
The San Jose Mercury-News reported that Bowlsby had called a Stanford athletic department staff meeting at 10 a.m. Pacific time.
The Big 12 hoped to have a commissioner hired by the conference’s spring meetings in Kansas City, which begin May 30. The contract of acting commissioner Chuck Neinas expires on June 30.

Bulldogs’ Ray adds juco talent
STARKVILLE — One more signature may wrap up Mississippi State’s first recruiting class under Rick Ray.
Olney Central (Ill.) Community College freshman Trivante Bloodman is scheduled to visit campus Thursday afternoon and will likely sign with MSU during his visit, adding four players signed in the last two weeks.
“I like the coaches and everything,” Bloodman said. “They’re really cool. I’d say there’s a 90 percent chance I’m going to Mississippi State.”

Golden Eagles to introduce new basketball coach Tyndall today
HATTIESBURG — Southern Miss fans are expected to get their first glimpse of new basketball coach Donnie Tyndall at 4 p.m. today in a news conference at the Trent Lott Center on the school’s campus.
Tyndall leaves Morehead State, where he served six years as head coach and led the program to a pair of NCAA Tournament appearances during the last four seasons.
Tyndall accepted the USM job Saturday morning. And although USM officials have not yet publicly acknowledged that Tyndall will replace Larry Eustachy, Morehead State officials on Sunday issued a news release saying that Tyndall is leaving for the USM job.

Once a coach, always a coach
Three years ago, my mother, a very young 70 at the time, decided it was time to retire. She’d spent her entire working career at the same place, a tiny high school in suburban New Jersey.
Hired out of college as an English teacher there, she finally left, one master’s degree and more than 40 years later — or, as I used to joke, just before they renamed the building after her — as a guidance counselor.
And she was terrified, convinced she’d be bored and worried that she’d never have enough to fill the hours she used to cram with work.
