The SEC is looking to start its own network

The SEC is looking to start its own network

Want to know why a conference that is already the most powerful college football conference in the country adds two new schools it doesn’t necessarily need? It does so because now the SEC can renegotiate its television contracts with both CBS and ESPN, the two networks that own the rights to SEC football games in the fall.

As you’d expect, given the television deals that have gone to the Pac-12 and the Big 12 in the last year, the SEC will be looking for more money from both ESPN and CBS for the right to broadcast games, though that’s not the end goal here.

According to Sports Business Daily(subscription), the SEC is once again looking into the idea of starting its own SEC Network, much like the Big Ten currently has.

Notre Dame has ‘contingency plans’ if it leaves Big East

Notre Dame has ‘contingency plans’ if it leaves Big East

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. — Notre Dame basketball coach Mike Brey said the Fighting Irish’s objective is to remain in the Big East, but admitted the school has “contingency plans” if it needs to join another conference.

“I know right now we’re focused 100 percent on [rebuilding the Big East] but there’s no question contingency plans [about joining another conference] on those pay grades higher than me have been discussed and will be discussed,” Brey told CBSSports.com at Monday’s Big East spring meetings.

When Notre Dame joined the Big East in all sports except football in 1995, the Big East consisted of 13 basketball members: Notre Dame, Boston College, UConn, Georgetown, Providence, St. John’s, Seton Hall, Syracuse, Villanova, Pittsburgh, Miami, Rutgers and West Virginia.

The Miscalculations Which Lead to My Missing the FSU to Big 12 Story

The Miscalculations Which Lead to My Missing the FSU to Big 12 Story

Have you ever stood by and watched as a friend entered, or left, a marriage you KNEW that friend shouldn’t be entering, or leaving?  Your best attempts to prevent this friend from making what you and many others see as a huge mistake fall on deaf ears.  Reason and common sense bounce off your friend like a ball off a wall as a toxic mix of emotions drive him or her to a huge mistake.

This is how I feel watching Florida State’s increasingly likely move from the ACC to the Big 12.  My colleague Ingram Smith in his outstanding column paints a grim picture for those of us who’d like Florida State (and Clemson) to stay in the ACC while simultaneously wanting to see the ACC survive.

Big 12, SEC champs to play in bowl

Big 12, SEC champs to play in bowl

The Big 12 and the Southeastern conferences have announced a deal that will pit their football regular-season champions against each other in a New Year’s Day bowl game for five years beginning in 2014, positioning themselves for the expected switch to a four-team playoff.

In fact, SEC commissioner Mike Slive all but said that scenario is coming in Friday’s announcement of the agreement between two of the most successful BCS conferences.

New bowl game means football Final Four is coming

New bowl game means football Final Four is coming

In the ever-changing world of college conference realignment, the calm never seems to last very long. Blink, and the paradigm shifts. What appears to be a condemned disaster area one moment can make a miraculous turnaround in a matter of months.

This is the biggest, craziest high-stakes game of musical chairs the college sports world has ever seen. For proof of that, who could have imagined 12 months ago that the creation of a Southeastern Conference-Big 12 bowl game to rival the prestigious Rose Bowl could not only signal that a legitimate football playoff is on the way, but that the ripple effect would also be wildly beneficial to both Mizzou football and St. Louis University basketball?

Rebels await academic reports

Rebels await academic reports

OXFORD — Ole Miss should find out soon the status of three players who are in danger of not being academically eligible for the fall.

“We’re waiting on some final answers from faculty,” coach Hugh Freeze said. “You have to get 18 (hours) in two semesters. If you don’t get the 18, you cannot regain eligibility without sitting out in residence for one year. That’s the issue with those.”

More SEC expansion coming, but where?

More SEC expansion coming, but where?

The last time they stopped playing the “Realignment Rhapsody” and everybody scrambled for a seat, the SEC had 14 available chairs.

One year later, they’re cranking up the band again. And don’t be surprised if the SEC puts another couple of seats on the floor.

Even before the SEC holds a single sporting event as a 14-school conference, the possibility of further expansion is in the wind. WithFlorida State pondering its future in the ACC and batting its eyes at the Big 12, the intercollegiate deck soon could be reshuffled. Look for the SEC to do whatever is necessary to extend its footprint and strengthen its membership.

Ohio State’s Urban Meyer, AD Gene Smith admit ‘secondary’ NCAA violations

Ohio State’s Urban Meyer, AD Gene Smith admit ‘secondary’ NCAA violations

COLUMBUS, Ohio — At Ohio State right now, anything related to NCAA violations gets people’s attention.

Like first-year football coach Urban Meyer, less than three weeks after he was hired, committing a secondary violation by saying “good luck” to recruit Noah Spence at a game in December. Or athletic director Gene Smith committing a secondary violation in April by filming a video message to a football recruit.

Or even assistant coach Mike Vrabel using smokeless tobacco on the sidelines during football games last season, which was noted and reported to Ohio State by a Columbus-area health teacher, and was a secondary violation of NCAA rules against using tobacco during games or practice.
