Peyton Manning, Broncos ready to mesh on field

Watching John Fox and Peyton Manning lead separate NFL teams in the previous decade would suggest they have some work to do to get on the same offensive playbook page.

Fox is a head coach raised on the defensive side of the line of scrimmage. He has operated his offense as if half his thoughts are with his defense. Pound the running game. Milk the clock. Keep the defense on the sideline. Mix in an explosive pass play. Pound the running game.

Surprise! (Not.) Shanahan names RGIII his Day 1 starter after rookie minicamp

Surprise! (Not.) Shanahan names RGIII his Day 1 starter after rookie minicamp

The news has the same surprise quotient you’d expect from Andrew Luck getting all the reps right away with the Indianapolis Colts, or the idea that the Denver Broncos will be doing pretty much whatever the heck Peyton Manning wants. That said, you Rex Grossman and Kirk Cousins fans will have to shine it on. At the end of the Washington Redskins’ rookie mini-camp on Sunday, head coach Mike Shanahan made it clear that Robert Griffin III, the Baylor quarterback selected second overall in the 2012 NFL draft, will be his starting quarterback from his first official professional snap.

Colts QB Andrew Luck’s rookie minicamp ends with a touchdown toss

The three-day crash course in Colts 101 ended in fitting fashion Sunday morning.

Quarterback Andrew Luck scanned the field on the final play, saw wide receiver Jabin Sambrano cut to the right corner of the end zone and dropped the football into his hands.

Touchdown. End of rookie minicamp.

“That was a good way to finish,’’ Luck said.

2012 NFL Draft Grades

2012 NFL Draft Grades

The 2012 NFL Draft is in the books after one long and eventful weekend. There’s nothing left to do now but sit back and break down what each team did — and did not do — with their time on the clock.

The very unscientific formula behind these draft grades puts more weight on picks the higher they were made, as should be the case. So, a team could not save or ruin its draft with its late-round selections, but one guy in the first round or two could be a game-changer.

And with that, this year’s grades:

The NFL draft’s steals and reaches

The NFL draft’s steals and reaches

The book is closed on the 2012 NFL draft after 253 players were selected in seven rounds over the past three days. As is the case every year, there were a lot of head-scratching moments. Highly-rated prospects slipped through the cracks while several players were chosen much earlier than their talents warranted. Here’s a look at the steals and reaches from the past three days …

Eagles move up to pick Cox at 12

Eagles move up to pick Cox at 12

JIM WASHBURN is 62. He says this Eagles’ defensive line is his last coaching project, and the front office just handed him a big key to completing it.

“He’s an exploder, and he’s tough. If they can’t explode, I don’t want ‘em. If they don’t love football, I ain’t got no use for ‘em. He explodes and he can play and he likes it and he’s passionate,” Washburn said Thursday night, when asked about Fletcher Cox, the 6-4, 296-pound defensive tackle from Mississippi State the Eagles traded up from 15th to 12th in the first round to draft. “When God made him, he meant him to play in this system right here.”

Cleveland Browns’ deal to grab Trent Richardson is a stunning move that should thrill fans

Cleveland Browns’ deal to grab Trent Richardson is a stunning move that should thrill fans

BEREA, Ohio — Can you believe the Browns actually did it?

They not only drafted star Alabama running back Trent Richardson, they boldly took no chances and traded up a spot to make sure they nabbed their man at No. 3 in the NFL draft. Can you believe the Browns drafted a player whose jersey you’d immediately want to own, a player who you can’t wait to see?

Then they selected Oklahoma State’s 28-year-old quarterback Brandon Weeden with the No. 22 pick, their other first-round selection.

2012 NFL Draft: Round 1

2012 NFL Draft: Round 1

A pick-by-pick look at the first round of the 2012 NFL draft, by the Observer’s Ron Green Jr.:

1. Indianapolis Colts: Andrew Luck, QB, Stanford

Now that Peyton Manning has exited Indianapolis, the keys to the kingdom belong to Luck, who seems to have just about everything a team could want in a quarterback. He’s strong, smart and a natural leader with an exceptional sense of how to play. Like Manning 14 years ago, Luck isn’t stepping into a team loaded with talent but he’s the player around which everything will be built in Indianapolis. The Colts immediately got much better.

Draft’s top QBs honed skills in Texas 7-on-7

Houston is a long way from Radio City Music HallCopperas Cove might be in the center of Texas, but it’s not usually the center of attention. And Big Spring, Texas, will never be confused with the Big Apple.

But today, if three quarterbacks are selected in the first round of the NFL draft as expected, the spotlight will also shine on the state of Texas. Stanford’s Andrew Luck, who is from Houston, will be drafted No. 1 by theIndianapolis Colts, and Baylor’s Robert Griffin III, from Copperas Cove, is headed to the Washington Redskinsat No. 2. Texas A&M’s Ryan Tannehill, from Big Spring, will likely be a top-10 pick.
