Property owner isn’t buying David Freese’s deer story

Charlie Duff was one of many readers unhappy with last Saturday’s story about World Series hero David Freese swerving to avoid a deer and hitting a tree in with his SUV on Thanksgiving afternoon. But while most of the readers were unhappy with the story’s references to Freese’s past, which includes a history of drinking…

Colin Kaepernick ushers in an inked-up NFL quarterbacking era

San Francisco’s Colin Kaepernick is going to be a big-time NFL quarterback. That must make the guys in San Quentin happy. Approximately 98.7 percent of the inmates at California’s state prison have tattoos. I don’t know that as fact, but I’ve watched enough “Lockup” to know it’s close to accurate. He is an admitted adulterer, a job-hopper, a liar. He is a guy who had an affair with a 25-year-old employee and then lied to his boss when it was discovered. He is a coach who left one of his teams in the middle of a season and reportedly informed his players by leaving notes…

I watched it with my very own eyes at the Georgia Dome on Thursday night. Brees wasn’t part of the reason theNew Orleans Saints lost to the Falcons 23-13. He was THE reason…

Tennessee has extended a lucrative contract offer to Jon Gruden and is awaiting his response, The Chattanooga Times Free Press reported Friday, throwing a surprising wrinkle into a 12-day coaching search that will revive speculation about the ESPN commentator and former Super Bowl-winning NFL head coach. Citing two unnamed sources, the newspaper said the only possible hang-up…

To take the starting job, underdog quarterbacks must first win the locker room

It’s not a common story, but it’s not unusual, either. A veteran quarterback, established in the locker room and on the field, signs a new contract as a team’s seeming incumbent. Through injury or sheer performance, that established quarterback sees himself cast aside by a younger, lower-drafted quarterback who displays an unusual acumen for the…

ACC vs. Maryland lawsuit looms large in realignment

1. I don’t want to get on a soapbox, but …   The Big East on Tuesday shot its popgun in the air and thumped its chest at the latest round of conference realignment. But understand this: The big, bad howitzer is coming, everyone. Stand back and cover your ears. When Maryland finds a way to…
