It’s a good time to be Kevin Sumlin

If this is the final salvo for Kevin Sumlin as the Houston Cougars head football coach, it sure has been quite a ride.

In a few short years, Sumlin has gone from young, up-and-coming assistant coach to the hottest name in coaching circles outside of Urban Meyer, who accepted the Ohio State job on Monday. Chronicle and San Antonio Express-News Texas A&M beat reporter Brent Zwerneman reports that Sumlin is the Aggies’ top target after the dismissal of head coach Mike Sherman, and based on all the noise coming from the West, Arizona State has its sights set on him as well.

Let’s make one thing clear. Nobody except Kevin Sumlin and his family (and probably his agent) knows what he’s going to do next. That’s the fact of the matter at this point. Who knows if even he’s sure of what he’s going to do? The rest is just speculation for now and until the dust settles in the wake of the Conference USA championship game, he’s still UH’s coach. For all we know, he might sit down with Mack Rhoades next week, agree to a renegotiated contract with a significant raise and stay at UH. You never know.
