The goal is simple, says Jon Rawl, one of the group’s leaders: “To have Colonel Reb rightfully put back in his place.”

About 25 people showed up at the Cherokee Inn to get autographs and take photos with the mascot, and hear Ole Miss’ first black football player, Ben Williams, speak.

The Colonel Reb Foundation, an 8-year-old group not affiliated with the university that claims to be the largest on-campus organization, also displayed a box full of 4,200 signed petitions from students in support of the old mascot.
